Domain name basics

Domain names are unique names which allow your site to be accessed on the internet. Domain names come in many different extensions and each forms a unique domain name. e.g. mydomain.com and mydomain.com.au are two different domain names.

Different domain names have different registration periods and some have regulations governing their registration. Domains are separate products from web hosting, but work together to give you a web site. To have a web site or email using your domain name, you will need a registered domain name and web hosting service.

Domain names work by DNS (Domain Name Server) settings. When someone requests your domain name, these settings are looked up. When you have web hosting with your domain name, you place your web hosts DNS servers in the domain DNS settings, so that all requests for your domain name are then handled by your web host.
